Stoops Likes Saturday Scrimmage

NORMAN, Okla. -- What a difference a couple days makes. Unimpressed by the crispness his team showed in Thursday night's scrimmage, Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops hastily added another scrimmage to his team's preseason calendar. The additional scrimmage, played Saturday at Gaylord Family - Oklahoma Memorial Stadium before a crowd estimated at 5,000, yielded a different response from the top Sooner.

“It was pretty good,” Stoops said of the 83-play scrimmage. “I liked the fact that we played a lot cleaner. There were very few penalties and very few busts. We just played in a more solid way. I felt good about the way we finished here.”

Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Jason White got the day off as his three back-ups took all of the snaps. Paul Thompson directed a pair of scoring drives. On the opening possession, the offense moved 65 yards in 12 plays to get a 37-yard field goal from Trey DiCarlo.

Later, Thompson, who was 10-of-18 for 76 yards, hit Mark Bradley with a 10-yard touchdown pass. Stoops liked what he saw from Thompson and all of his quarterbacks.

“(Paul) looked awfully good,” Stoops said. “He made the one bad mistake, but that's why we're out here doing it. He'll learn from that. He did a lot of really good things.

“We wanted to set Jason out and get those other guys a lot more snaps and evaluate them a little more. Jason has looked fantastic. Paul looked good and the rest of them did a nice job too.”

Tommy Grady tossed two scoring passes, a 13-yarder to D.J. Wolfe, and a 5-yarder to Russell Dennison. Grady finished the day at 9-of-17 yards for 79 yards.

True freshman Rhett Bomar was 11-of-21 for 74 yards.

Kejuan Jones was the top rusher with 11 carries for 47 yards. TE Joe Jon Finley led the receivers with five grabs for 31 yards.

Cornerback Darien Williams topped the defense with nine tackles and two pass deflections.

The kicking competition continued between Trey DiCarlo and Garrett Hartley.

DiCarlo was 6-of-11 with a long of 37 yards three times. Hartley was 8-of-9 with his lone miss coming from 52 yards. He made kicks from 52 and 54 yards.

“Trey has some bad shin splints and is a little worn out from camp,” Stoops said. “I believe Trey will be really solid. The story is Garrett Hartley is very good. If there's any story, they're both very, very talented. Trey is sore. I realize that. We'll wait until he gets rested up and let them compete a little more.”

After the practice, Stoops announced the team captains, as selected during a team vote. The captains are Vince Carter, Mark Clayton, Dan Cody, Dusty Dvoracek, Lance Mitchell and Jason White.

Stoops said he was undecided about an exact practice schedule for next week. Most of the practices will be closed, although the OU coach said that the team may hold an open scrimmage Tuesday that would feature younger players.
