OU Holds First Scrimmage of Preseason

OU Holds First Scrimmage of Preseason

August 15, 2004 | Football

NORMAN, Okla. -- Jason White connected on 11-of-17 passes and two touchdowns Sunday night in Oklahoma's first scrimmage of the August camp.  The 118-play scrimmage lasted for two hours and was played before 11,000 fans at Gaylord Family - Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.

That crowd held its breath early in the practice when true freshman running back Adrian Peterson went down with what OU head coach Bob Stoops termed a shoulder dislocation.

“It's a minor dislocation,” Stoops said.  “From what I understand, the rest of it looks good.  There isn't anything else wrong with it.  We'll just take some time to let him get the soreness out.  He's a strong guy upper body-wise.  Hopefully that will protect him and he'll be able to go on with it.  We don't know how long it will keep him down.  They usually say seven to 10 days to get the soreness out.  Then after that, doctors determine how strong it is to get back in there.  Hopefully it won't miss too much.  He looked good when he was in there.”

Peterson carried six times for eight yards before going down.

Donta Hickson was the top ball carrier with 22 rushes for 52 yards and one touchdown, a one-yard plunge.  Kejuan Jones had 10 totes for 38.  Courtney Tennial came on to carry 11 times for 27 yards.

White's first touchdown throw was a 20-yarder to Travis Wilson.  Later, he fired an 18-yarder to Brandon Jones.  White, who was 11-of-17 for 100 yards, was picked off once by strong safety Donte Nicholson.

“Jason looked great,” Stoops said.  I thought all of the quarterbacks looked great and Jason in particular.  It's what you'd expect.  All those games a year ago and now he's moving around much better.  He's awfully good.”

James Moses was the top pass catcher with four for 29 yards.  Quentin Chaney caught three for 41, while Wilson had three for 30.  Eight different receivers had at least 20 yards in receptions.

The defense was impressive, too.  Linebacker Rufus Alexander led the team with eight tackles, while another linebacker, Demarrio Pleasant, and defensive back Brandon Shelby both had six.

The Sooners practice at 8:45 a.m. and 5:15 p.m. on Monday at the Rugby Fields.  The next scrimmage is set for Aug. 19.

Additional Bob Stoops Quotes
On Adrian Peterson...
“I'll say this, he's a wonderful guy to work with.  He's an impressive young man in that he smiles and is a very positive upbeat player.  All of the players really like him and respect him for the way he has worked. I don't think there's anyone we've had in our six years who came in and worked so hard as a freshman.  The players see that.  He's a joy to coach.  He's earning his time.”

On the team's attitude in running the ball...
“We had a little more attitude to us.  We've got to keep it up.  It was better and it's something we're going to keep working for.  I thought we ran it decently through the scrimmage.”

On the secondary...
"
I was pleased.  They had their good plays.  They did a good job.”

On players who are emerging...
“D.J. Wolfe is someone that I've mentioned and he's one.  Rufus Alexander, Clint Ingram, Demarrio Pleasant have been really good and playing well.  Chijioke (Onyenegecha) is really starting to come on and Darien Williams.  Eric Bassey is really playing well.  Tony Cade is stepping up.  Offensively, most of those guys have been there.  Chris Bush has really been making big improvement in the line.  The tight ends are doing well.  They all have a chance to make some nice plays for us.  We have a lot of other guys playing well too, but those are some who maybe haven't played as much as the others in the past.”
