NORMAN, Okla. -- Chamber of Commerce weather greeted the Sooner football team Wednesday evening on the Rugby Fields in Norman. Clear skies and a practice temperature of 75 degrees gave the team a respite from Oklahoma's typical rugged August heat. Along with the outside conditions, head coach Bob Stoops seemed pleased with the performance of his players.
"Another really good day," said Stoops following practice. "Loved the effort, the way the guys were running around and really working hard against each other. I'm really pleased with it. A lot needs polished, but that's to be expected. We're doing a lot and have got a ton in already. Guys are handling it well."
Wednesday night's workout marked the third of the preseason but was the first with the players wearing uppers. Stoops said it becomes easier to evaluate performance once players don pads.
Said Stoops, "You can evaluate a lot better -- how you're blocking, hand placement, position on blocks, taking on blocks. You're able to be more physical and that's how the game's played."
OU will practice Thursday and Friday in uppers only at 5 p.m. before moving to full pads for a 7:50 a.m. practice on Saturday.
The team will hold the first of its three preseason scrimmages this Sunday at Gaylord Family - Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. The starting time is tentatively set for 5:30 p.m., although that is subject to slight adjustment.
