Sooners Hit Field for Second Practice

NORMAN, Okla. -- The OU football team hit the field for the second day of preseason practice under cloudy skies in Norman Tuesday evening. Threatening clouds skirted the Rugby Fields on campus but didn't hamper the practice routine.

Oklahoma will practice every evening through Friday at 5:30 p.m. before breaking out full pads for a 7:50 a.m. practice on Saturday morning.

“We had an excellent day. I couldn't be more pleased," said head coach Bob Stoops following the team's two hour-plus practice session. "Guys are running around and have a lot of enthusiasm.

"In our team session we got about 45-48 snaps, a bunch of blitzing and we haven't even got pads on yet, so they really retained a lot and looked good.”

Competition At Cornerback
Although commenting that it was too early in the preseason to make a final judgment, Stoops expressed his pleasure with the competition emerging among the talented group of defensive backs.

“They are doing well. Perk (Antonio Perkins) really looks good, which we've known, and those other guys are making good progress,” Stoops commented. “Darien Williams made a lot of good plays today, Jowahn Poteat made some nice ones, Eric's (Bassey) doing well you know all those guys seem to keep getting better and better.”

Newcomers Marcus Walker and Chijioke Onyenegecha were also pointed out by Stoops as two players who have also shown some positive signs in their performances during the preseason.

Counting On Clint
Listed on the preseason depth chart as the starter at the strong side linebacker position, junior Clint Ingram has made an early positive impression on the Sooner coaching staff with his progress during the preseason.

“He's done really well. He's made a lot of great progress,” said Stoops. “He's always been a guy that's played hard, is very physical, can run and has just been able to understand everything.

“In this position I think he's really found a home and hopefully he can continue to progress like he has.”

This year's preseason practices will take place at the Rugby Fields located west of the Lloyd Noble Center. This is a change from previous years when the team worked out at the Intramural Fields on Stinson St.

All practices (prior to the first game week) are open unless otherwise announced. At the present time, three scrimmages are scheduled for Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.

Fans planning to attend the Rugby Field workouts should park in the lot west of the Lloyd Noble Center. Parking will not be permitted on Blankenship Drive, which connects Chautauqua with the LNC.
