Chad Thrailkill has been promoted to assistant coach, Oklahoma women's basketball coach Sherri Coale and Director of Athletics Joe Castiglione said Sunday. Thrailkill replaces former assistant coach Bo Overton, who accepted the head coaching position with the University of Missouri-Kansas City in June. Prior to the promotion, Thrailkill served two-years as Coale's Director of Basketball Operations.
“Chad has done a tremendous job for us in the past two seasons as Director of Basketball Operations, but coaching is his niche,” Coale said. “He has a gift for working with young people, and he has an extraordinary eye for the game of basketball.”
Thrailkill, in addition to assistant coaches Jan Ross and Stacy Hansmeyer, will oversee recruiting efforts for the Sooners. He will also be responsible for assisting with film breakdown of opponents and players and on-court coaching duties.
“Chad is a terrific teacher and he will become an outstanding recruiter,” Coale said. “He's a natural, and perfect fit for our on-the-floor staff. I am extremely excited about the direction of our recruiting with the combined efforts of Chad, Stacy (Hansmeyer) and Jan (Ross). I have been and continue to be very fortunate to be surrounded by loyal, talented, hard-working individuals who are intent upon pursuing championships and representing the University of Oklahoma in its pursuit of excellence.”
Thrailkill was primarily responsible for scheduling OU's team travel, scheduling of events, team meals and facility arrangements the last two years. He has already gained experience as the liaison for student-athlete housing, the players' parents and athletics administration departments.
Before coming to OU in 2002, Thrailkill was the head coach for Norman North High School boys' basketball team where he guided NNH to the 2002 Regional title, earning him Mid-State Conference Coach of the Year.
Three of the seven years Coale served as Norman High School head girl's basketball coach, she was assisted by Thrailkill. The two produced a three-year record of 76-7 (.916 winning percentage), coached three teams to the state playoffs (1994-96), produced a state championship team (1995-96) and had a state runner-up finish (1994-95).
Thrailkill also served a four-year stint as head girls' basketball coach for Westmoore High School from 1996-2000. His 2000 squad finished second in the state with an overall record of 25-3, while the 1999 team won the state crown with a 25-4 mark. For his coaching performance, Thrailkill was named the 1999 Region, Mid-State Conference and Big All-City Coach of the Year. He was also asked to coach the All-Star team and served as an assistant coach for the Jim Thorpe All-Star Games that same year.
Thrailkill earned a bachelor of science in physical education from Southern Nazarene in 1993. He and his wife, April, have three children, daughter Shelby, and sons Brayden and Hudson.
