The College Gymnastics Association honored 41 individual gymnasts as 2004 All-America Scholar-Athletes for attaining at least a 3.50 grade point average in addition to earning a minimum NCAA gymnastics score of 8.0 during the 2003-2004 academic year.
Oklahoma's Josh Gore and Heath Mueller were recognized for earning grade point averages of 3.880 and 3.500 respectively. Gore, Mueller and the 2004 Sooners finished as the nation's runners up in the 2004 NCAA Championships in April. Gore was one of eight All-Americans for OU, the best in the nation.
Navy's Drew Barker and Peter Langley not only achieved perfect 4.0 grade point averages but also earned their fourth straight CGA Academic All-American designation. James Houle of Ohio State, Matt Metzger of Iowa, and Michael Smith of Springfield also received four years of Academic All-American recognition. Erik Garnett representing Illinois-Champaign, James Brennan from Springfield, and Sean Blackman at Navy were the other gymnasts to earn 4.0 grade point averages. Stanford University claimed the national academic team title for the second straight year with a team grade point average of 3.382. Springfield College vaulted to the second place position while NCAA team champion Pennsylvania State University finished number three. The College of William and Mary and the United States Naval Academy rounded out the top five with Iowa, Illinois-Chicago, James Madison, Oklahoma, and California-Berkeley completing the top 10.
