AMES, Iowa Iowa State pulled off an unlikely upset by the score of 2-1 against the No. 20 Oklahoma softball team on Saturday afternoon at the Southwest Athletic Complex in Ames, Iowa.
The Sooners finished the Big 12 season with an 11-7 record and head into their home finale with a 37-17-1 overall mark. Iowa State improved to 2-12 in conference and 12-29 on the year.
An opposite-field solo home run by Heather Scaglione put the Sooners up 1-0 in the first inning. Scaglione's 15th homer moved her into a four-way tie for fifth place on the OU single-season home run list. She is tied with Ashli Barrett (2001), Becky Burroughs (1994) and Leah Gulla (2002).
Scaglione is currently sixth on the OU career home run list with 29 long balls. She is two shy of No. 5 Jennifer Stump, who had 31 home runs during her four-year career (2000-03).
Box Score
Scaglione also drew a pair of walks in the game, which put her season total at 38. The mark is tied for the second-best single-season total in OU history. She is in a deadlock at No. 2 with Jennifer Stump who drew 38 free passes in 2001.
Unfortunately, for OU its offense could not put together any other rallies. They had just four hits after the first inning, with two of those being infield singles.
The Cyclones scored two unanswered runs with scores in the third and fifth inning to pull ahead of OU 2-1. An error by Mariee Mena put ISU catcher Fallon Johnson in scoring position in the third frame. She scored two batters later on a single by Cariee Akins.
While ISU's first run was unearned, there was no doubt about the Cyclones second score. Cyclone junior Misty Kimura's seventh home run of the season easily cleared the right-field fence and gave ISU the 2-1 advantage after five innings.
The Sooners are off for 10 days before closing out the regular season with Senior Night against Tulsa on May 11. OU will look to avenge an earlier loss to Tulsa in the rematch, which is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at the OU Softball Complex. The Big 12 Tournament begins May 12, but the Sooners (currently the No. 5 seed) will not play until the second day of competition on May 13.
