Men's NCAA Championship Meet To Air On ESPN2

April 06, 2004 | Men's Gymnastics

NORMAN, Okla.   The University of Oklahoma men's gymnastics team and its run for a third straight NCAA title will air on ESPN2 on Thursday, April 8 at 2:30 p.m. (CST) as a tape-delay.  OU finished second at the title meet with the NCAA's sixth highest score, a 222.300.

OU finished behind Penn State (223.350), which won its NCAA record 11th National Championship.  After a disappointing 217.750 in the qualifying session on Friday, the Sooners roared back during the team finals with their second highest score of the season.

The Sooners finished the 2004 season at 24-4 and of their eight All-Americans named this season, five return for next season.  Among those are Brian Trause (parallel bars), Josh Gore (parallel bars), David Henderson (all-around and rings) and Jamie Henderson (rings).

In his fifth season, Oklahoma head coach Mark Williams has won two NCAA titles, finished twice on two occasions and fourth in his first year.  He currently owns a record of 117-11 (.914 winning percentage).  Williams had this to say after his teams effort during the NCAA Championships:

“Saturday was an absolute turnaround from the performance we had on Friday.  Even though we did not win the title, I am thrilled because we gave a 100 percent effort. We had a fantastic meet but Penn State was better and they deserve a lot of credit. This was a great competition, one of the better ones I can remember in terms of how close it came. I am extremely proud of my team for coming back the way they did after qualifiers.”

Former OU gymnast Bart Conner and Chris Marlowe provide the play-by-play of the 2004 NCAA Championships on ESPN2.
