NORMAN, Okla. Nothing was textbook about the Oklahoma softball team's weekend sweep of Kansas. Despite not plating an earned run or recording an extra-base hit, the Sooners were able to claim their fourth straight win with a 2-1 triumph over the Jayhawks on Sunday afternoon at the OU Softball Complex.
After intentionally walking Heather Scaglione (0-for-2, 2 walks) and Christina Enea (2-for-3, RBI) to load the bases, KU catcher Dani Day let a ball get by her in the dirt to hand the Sooners the dramatic win in the seventh inning.
Kristin Vesely (0-for-2, 1 run) led off the seventh inning with a bases on balls and was sacrificed over by freshman Norrelle Dickson (1-for-3). Vesely scored the decisive run with a head-first slide into home plate after the passed ball.
Box Score
The Sooners led 1-0 for five innings thanks to a RBI single by Enea in the second frame. OU starter Kami Keiter missed on an inside drop ball to Jayhawk second baseman Jessica Moppin, who knocked it out of the park to tie the game at one in the sixth inning.
The weekend sweep was rather remarkable for the Sooners, who won 10-1 on Saturday, and did not score an earned run in the two games. The Sooners also failed to record an extra base hit, while their weekend run production was equal to their hit total of 12.
Four of the Sooners five hits came from the top six hitters in the lineup Sunday. OU also recorded a season-high eight walks, all of which came from batters one through six. Enea was the only Sooner with two hits, while Vesely and Scaglione both earned a pair of free passes.
Keiter's 15th complete game of the season improved her record to 12-9. The junior lefty allowed just three hits while striking out six and walking only one batter. Aside from the home run, Keiter did not allow another KU runner beyond second base.
The Sooners improved to 35-16-1 on the year and 9-6 in Big 12 play, while the Jayhawks dropped to 27-25-1 and 3-10 in league.
Next up for OU is the final game of the Bedlam Series, presented by Bank of Oklahoma and your Oklahoma Ford Dealers. The Pokes (26-24, 6-8 Big 12) and Sooners will tussle on Marita Hynes Field this upcoming Wednesday at 7 p.m.
