Women's Golf In First Place Heading Into Final Round

NORMAN, Okla. -- The No. 16 Oklahoma women's golf team is in first place after two rounds at the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic.  The Sooners played 36 holes Monday and recorded a first-round 308 and shot the tournament's best round of the day, a 294, in the second round to finish with a 602 (+26).  The Sooners lead the field by six strokes. 

Oklahoma is hosting the tournament held at the 6,013-yard, par-72, Jimmie Austin OU Golf Course in Norman, Okla.

Leading all competition is senior Lisa Meldrum who is in first place after carding a first-round 73 and a second-round 70, the lowest round of the day, for a one-under-par 143 heading into the final round.  Senior Hope Edge is tied for 11th after carding a first-round 80 and an even-par 72 in the second round for a total of 152 (+8).  

Sophomore Amparo Gala trails Edge by one stroke and is tied for 15th after carding a 77 and 76 in respective rounds.  Junior Emily Milberger, the 2003 Susie Maxwell Champion, is tied for 30th after shooting a first-round 78 and second-round 79 for a total of 157 (+13).  Freshman Jaclyn Stelzer rounds out the Sooner quintet and is tied for 35th with a 158 (+14) after shooting an 82 and 76 in respective rounds.

The Sooners had six girls who competed individually.  Sophomore Cathryn Uselton had an impressive day after carding a career-low 74 in the first round and an 80 in the second round to finish tied for 16th with a 154 (+10).  Junior Jenni Nimmo is tied for 50th with a 164 (+20) while freshman Alana Donaldson recorded a two-round 165 (+21) and is tied for 56th heading into final-round play. 

Freshman Charli Bullard, competing in her first collegiate tournament, recorded a 166 (+22) and is tied for 59th.  Sophomore Marie Turner is tied for 82nd with a 176 (+32) and sophomore Erin Goranson is in 85th with a 178 (+34).

“I was very pleased with our team's will to come back today,” Head Coach Carol Ludvigson said.  “I wasn't worried after the first round, but I wasn't pleased either.  This team has character and they showed that today.  I am extremely proud of Lisa Meldrum who has overcome some physical and mental struggles lately.  She played great today.”

Final round play will start Tuesday with an 8 a.m. shotgun start.
