NORMAN, Okla. The University of Oklahoma's David Henderson was named this week's MPSF (Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) top gymnast after he helped the Sooners break their own NCAA scoring record Saturday night at McCasland Field House in Norman. The No. 2 ranked Sooners posted a 225.200 to defeat No. 1 Illinois, 221.975.
Henderson earned his second MPSF Gymnast of the Week award this season and the Crosby, Texas native is the only gymnast in the conference to do so.
The junior recorded four career-highs in the Sooners' last win, their 50th straight victory. He tied one other career-high and hit a season-high mark in another event. Some of those marks included his second consecutive all-around title in which he posted a 55.275 (career-high) to finish first and his 9.650 (career-high) to take first on the vault.
“David is performing well across the board and it is nice to see him recognized for the second week in a row,” said Oklahoma head coach Mark Williams. “He was a big part of an amazing team effort on Saturday against the No. 1 ranked team in the nation.”
Henderson is currently ranked eighth in all-around, tied for ninth on rings and 15th on vault in this week's NCAA rankings. Last week, he was named the midwest region gymnast of the week after winning the all-around at Stanford.
The Sooners return to action next weekend to conclude the regular season at Nebraska on Friday, March 12 at 7 p.m.
