Sooners Drop Meeting With No. 11 Texas, 4-3

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. -- The No. 17 Oklahoma women's tennis team came up short Saturday falling to No.11 Texas, 4-3 at the Woodlake Racquet Club in Oklahoma City. The match was scheduled to be played at the OU Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman but was moved indoors due to the rain. The Sooners fall to 12-2 on the season while the Longhorns improve to 13-2.

“It was disappointing to lose such a closely contested match, “ said head coach Mark Johnson. “The doubles hurt us, but we came back in singles. At one point we were only a few points away from winning, but couldn't finish it off.”

After losing the doubles point, the Sooners fought hard to win three of the six singles matches. OU's 6th-ranked Anda Perianu (Braila, Romania) moved to 10-1 on the season with an impressive 6-1, 6-0 win over 11th-ranked Petra Dizar of Texas. Freshman Irina Lykina (Kazan, Russia) claimed her fifth straight victory and moved to 10-2 on the season defeating UT's Mia Marovic in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. Junior Heather Saluri (Des Moines, Iowa) claimed OU's third point with a three set victory over UT's Kendra Strohm, 0-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5).

In doubles, OU's Lykina and Jessica Braver (Edmond, Okla.) posted the Sooners only win. Lykina and Braver moved to 9-2 on the season with a 9-8 win over UT's Kelly Baritot and Ristine Olson.

The Sooners continue Big 12 action with Texas A&M on Sun., March 28, at the Headington Family Tennis Center. The match is scheduled for 12 p.m. and admission is free.
