April 03, 2004 | Women's Tennis

The No. 15 Oklahoma women's tennis team claimed its second Big 12 win of the season Saturday, with a 6-1 victory over Kansas State, at the Washburn Tennis Facility in Manhattan, Kan. OU won the doubles point and five of six singles matches for the victory. The Sooners improve to (13-3, 2-2 Big 12), while the Wildcats fall to (4-10, 0-6, Big 12).

“It was good for us to get solid win's at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles,” said head coach Mark Johnson. “Everyone went out today and did what they had to do to win their match. Everyone stuck to their game plans and that's why we came up with the win.”

The Sooners were strong in the singles, taking four of six singles in straight sets. OU's 6th-ranked senior Anda Perianu (Braila, Romania) moved to 12-1 on the season with a 6-2, 6-2, win over KSU's Maria Rosenberg. Juniors Jessica Braver (Edmond, Okla.) and Heather Saluri (Des Moines, Iowa) and sophomore Joi-lee Beachler (Oklahoma City) all posted straight set win's for the Sooners. Freshman Irina Lykina (Kazan, Russia) improved her record to 11-3 on the season with a three-set victory over KSU's Paulina Castillejos, 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (3).

In doubles play OU dominated at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Braver and Lykina moved to 11-3 on the season at No. 2, with a 8-2 win over KSU's Jessica Simosa and Judith Diaz. At No. 3, OU's duo of Gabby Baker (Gold Coast, Australia) and Bethany Griffin (Amarillo, Texas) pushed their spring record to 9-3, defeating KSU's Hayley McIver and Emily Mickelson, 8-4. OU's 13th-ranked team of Perianu and Saluri were upset by KSU's Rosenberg and Castillejos, 8-6.
