Sooners Open Outdoor Track and Field Season

March 17, 2004 | Track and Field

NORMAN, Okla. -- The indoor season wrapped up four days ago and on Thursday, the Sooner track and field teams will open the outdoor portion of the 2004 season.

Juniors Dan Strong and Veronica Clayborne and coaches Jill Lancaster and Tom Williams left today for the College Station Combined. The meet will open on Thursday on the campus of Texas A&M. Both Strong and Clayborne will compete in the collegiate division of the meet with Strong entered in the decathlon and Clayborne set to compete in the heptathlon. Action begins Thursday morning and will conclude on Friday.

Two other Sooner combined event competitors, Chaundra Allard and LaDonna Moore, will sit out this competition but may join the OU group that heads to Waco, Texas, for Saturday's Dr Pepper Invitational.

Several Sooners will leave Friday for the Waco meet. Scheduled to compete are Cale Drumwright, javelin; Katie Blue, shot put and discus; Renea' Burns, javelin; Emily Leonard, 3000; Barbara Phillips, shot put and hammer; and Shannon Wilson, 3000. Allard and Moore may compete in the javelin and shot put. A final decision on their status will be made later in the week.

“We are looking forward to opening the outdoor season,” Lancaster said. “We are coming off a strong finish to the indoor season and will build on that in the outdoor. Dan had a tough season last year but he is already ahead of where he was at this time last year. We saw some of what he is capable of doing at the Big 12 Indoor and he is confident after establishing PRs at that competition. If he continues to make improvements this spring, he will be where he should be after training for the decathlon for just three years.

“Veronica continues to improve as she learns the hepathlon. She made a strong move last year during the outdoor season and she set PRs at the indoor conference meet in the pentathlon. I think she is ready to make a move to the next level and we may see that in this competition,” Lancaster added.

The rest of the Sooner track and field teams will begin returning to campus today after some time off for spring break. The remainder of the teams will open the outdoor season on March 27 at either the UTEP Invitational in El Paso or at the UTA Invitational in Arlington.
