The 33rd-ranked Oklahoma women's tennis team (7-1) travels to Missouri this weekend to take on the 50th-ranked Tigers (6-3) on Saturday, March 6, at the Green Tennis Center in Colombia, Mo., at 1 p.m.
Last Time Against Missouri
Oklahoma hosted the Tigers for the first time at the OU Headington Family Tennis Center last season. In difficult conditions, the Sooners edged out a tough Tigers team, 4-3. Anda Perianu (Braila, Romania) proved to be the match winner that day as she defeated MU's Urska Juric in a tough fought three-setter that went more than three hours to clinch the dual for the Sooners.
Sooners Edge TCU And SMU, 4-3
Oklahoma concluded its successful Texas road trip Sunday with two close fought 4-3 wins over No. 45 TCU and No. 46 SMU. The Sooners were strong in doubles all weekend as they swept both matches. Against TCU, the Sooners picked up three singles wins from junior Heather Saluri (Des Moines, Iowa), and freshmen Gabby Baker (Gold Coast, Australia) and Irina Lykina (Kazan, Russia). Against SMU, senior Anda Perianu (Braila, Romania), junior Jessica Braver (Edmond, Okla.), and sophomore Joi-lee Beachler (Oklahoma City) all posted singles victories for the Sooners.
Baker and Beachler Step Up For The Sooners
Two stars emerged from this weekends play against the Horned Frogs and the Mustangs. Against TCU the match was tied at three all with Gabby Baker (Gold Coast, Australia) last on the court. In front of a very vocal TCU crowd, Baker came back from 3-1 down in the third set to win six straight games for the match and the dual. A similar scenario occured when the Sooners met SMU. This time it was sophomore Joi-lee Beachler (Oklahoma City) who stepped up for the Sooners. Beachler's singles win clinched the dual.
Oklahoma's Undefeated Doubles Team
OU's undefeated doubles pair of Gabby Baker (Gold Coast, Australia) and Bethany Griffin (Amarillo, Texas) moved to 5-0 on the season at the No. 3 spot after last weekends play. Baker and Griffin defeated TCU's Paige Brown and Jenn Chay, 8-4, and then went on to defeat SMU's Lynsie Jones and Nadia Vaughan, 9-7.
OU To Host Big 12 Championships
Oklahoma will host the 2004 Men's and Women's Big 12 Tennis Championships at the Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman. Tournament action begins Fri., April 30 and runs through Sun., May 2. Ticket prices are as follows; All session four day pass, $15, single session adult pass, $5, and single session youth/student pass, $2.
