The Oklahoma softball team tied Illinois in the championship game of the LSU Tiger Classic 2-2. The contest was called after seven innings due to the travel contraints of both teams. OU finished with a 5-0-1 record in the tournament and was crowned the tournament champions after posting the only undefeated record. Four Sooners were named to the all-tournament team including Heather Scaglione being named the MVP.
Illinois starter Sherri Taylor limited the Sooners to just one hit in the first two innings. In the third inning junior Heather Scaglione touched up Taylor with an RBI single that scored Kristin Vesely and put OU up 1-0. Scaglione was the culprit again in the fifth inning as she laced a single into right field off of reliever Amanda Fortune to tie the game at 2-2.
Sophomore starting pitcher Nicole Denes was able to fight off potential Illinois rallies in the first three innings, thanks in part to a couple double plays. Denes couldn't escape in the fourth inning when she walked Illini catcher Janna Sartini to load the bases. Illini designated player Lauren Gronski followed with a two-run double to put the Sooners behind by a score of 2-1.
Freshman Jessica Johnson relieved Denes with one out in the top of the sixth inning. Johnson came in with runners at first and second and quickly recorded a ground out. She allowed a single to the next batter and needed Vesely to gun down Illini pinch-runner Leann Butcher at home plate to keep the game knotted at two.
For the first time all weekend the Sooners failed to capitalize in clutch situations. Heading into the seventh inning, the Sooners had already left eight runners on base.
Oklahoma faces Oklahoma Christian in its home opener Wednesday at 4 p.m. Admission to the game is $5 for adults and $2 for children.
