Softball Cruises To 8-0 Victory In Home Opener

The Oklahoma softball team made quick work of Oklahoma Christian with a 8-0 run-rule victory (five innings) in its home opener at the OU Softball Complex on Wednesday afternoon. Sophomore Nicole Denes picked up her second shutout of the season, while reigning Big 12 Player of the Week Heather Scaglione powered the Sooners offense with a two-run home run.

Denes improves her perfect record to 4-0 on the season, after dealing a three-hit shutout to the Lady Eagles. Denes, who was an all-tournament pitcher at the LSU Tiger Classic last weekend, struck out eight batters and did not allow a runner past second base.

Scaglione's two-run blast put the Sooners up 3-0 after one inning. The Sooners added a couple runs in the bottom half of the second inning thanks to RBI from freshman Norrelle Dickson and junior Christina Enea. Dickson went 3-for-3 on the day and is currently hitting .478 on the season. Enea matched Scaglione with two RBI, a game-high.

The Sooners posted another three-spot in the bottom of the third inning after junior Jessica Leslie led off with a triple. Freshman Jamie Fox followed with a RBI single and eventually came around to score on Mariee Mena's fielders choice. Mena would score the Sooners eighth run on a wild pitch by Eagle reliever Courtney Quine.

The Oklahoma Sooners head to Tallahassee, Fla., for the Sunshine State tournament which begins Friday. OU will be in action all weekend with their first game set for an 11 a.m. (CST) start against No. 22 South Carolina.

Oklahoma improved to 6-0-1 on the season, while Oklahoma Christian (0-1) lost its first game of the season.
