OU Womens Tennis Sweeps OBU, ORU and SNU

The Oklahoma women's tennis team opened its 2004 Indoor season with three straight victories Friday. OU swept past Oklahoma Baptist, 6-0, Oral Roberts, 7-0 and Southern Nazarene 5-0 at the Woodlake Racquet Club in Oklahoma City. The Sooners didn't drop a set in all three duals, imporving their overall record to 5-0, while OBU and SNU drop to 0-1 and OBU falls to 0-2.

“I was pleased with the way the we competed today,” said head coach Mark Johnson. “The girls were focused and played hard.”

The Sooners were strong early in their first match against OBU dropping only one game in the dual. OU took all six singles matches in straight sets. With senior standout Anda Perianu (Braila, Romania) sitting out for the first match OU was led by freshman Irina Lykina (Kazan, Russia) at the No.1 spot and defeated Sarah Haselwood of OBU 6-0, 6-0. Sophmore Joi-lee Beachler (Oklahoma City, Okla.) posted her first singles win for the spring season defeating OBU's Kim Daniel, 6-0, 6-1.

Against ORU the Sooners dominated early sweeping the doubles and then taking all six singles matches. OU was led by third-ranked Anda Perianu who defeated ORU's Rachel Budd 6-1, 6-0. Freshman Gabby Baker (Gold Coast, Australia) won her first singles match as a Sooner dominating Jennifer Helm of ORU, 6-0, 6-0.

The Sooners next faced Southern Nazarene. OU again dominated singles play with the Sooners only dropping three games in the five matches completed. Juniors Heather Saluri (Des Moines, Iowa) and Jessica Braver (Edmond, Okla.) did not loose a game in their respective singles matches against the Crimson Storm.

The Sooners were scheduled to play Iowa State Saturday, Feb. 7 at the Santa Fe Country Club in Oklahoma City at 4 p.m., but the match has been postponed due to inclement weather in Ames, Iowa. The match will be rescheduled at a later date.
