The Oklahoma women's tennis team dropped its first match of the season to No. 51 New Mexico, 5-2, Saturday at the Santa Fe Country Club in Oklahoma City. The Sooners fell to 5-1 while the Lobos improved to 4-2 on the season.
“It was a disappointing loss for us,” said head coach Mark Johnson. “The doubles was what hurt us. We had a slow start and were not able to create momentum. We liked the match-ups that we had but were unable to get it done. New Mexico competed well and out played us today.”
The Sooners posted victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 singles positions for their only points of the evening. No. 3 ranked Anda Perianu (Braila, Romania) defeated UNM's Iva Gersic, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1 to claim her fourth straight win at No.1 singles this spring. Sooner freshman Gabby Baker (Gold Coast, Australia) provided OU's other point at No. 3 with a straight-set victory over UNM's Sandy Lukowski, 6-1, 6-0.
In doubles, OU's undefeated pair of Gabby Baker and Bethany Griffin (Amarillo, Texas) moved to 3-0 on the season with an 8-3 victory over UNM's Michelle Heidbrink and Tiffany Robertson.
The Sooners next face TCU Friday, Feb. 27 at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth, Texas at 2 p.m.
