OU Announces 2004 Football Recruiting Class

OU Announces 2004 Football Recruiting Class

February 05, 2004 | Football

In what has become a rite of February, Oklahoma head football coach Bob Stoops announced today another highly-regarded recruiting class, this again considered among the nation's elite by most accounts.

The class announced Wednesday includes 18 new Sooners that add more quality and depth to a program that has skyrocketed in Stoops' five seasons. OU is coming off its fifth straight bowl appearance and has twice played for the national championship during that span, winning the 2000 crown.

Review: 2003 Class

"We've recruited a lot of outstanding players here who have allowed us to compete at a very high level," Stoops said. "We feel this class continues that trend. It has always been our goal to add balance and athletic ability to our program on signing day. We met those goals again this year. This group runs very well and possesses a high degree of talent."

The 18 announced Wednesday represent eight different positions, including four offensive linemen, three receivers, three defensive linemen, three defensive backs, two running backs, one quarterback, one linebacker and one kicker.

"Due to regular NCAA limits on the number of players we can sign, and the few seniors that we lost a year ago, we weren't able to sign as many this year as we have in past years," Stoops added. "But while the quantity wasn't the same, the quality is outstanding. It is one of the top classes in the country by many accounts."

All are high school products with the exception of junior college transfers Chijoke Onyenegecha and Remi Ayodele. Onyenegecha is one of three on the list that are already enrolled at OU. The other two are J.D. Quinn and D.J. Wolfe, who completed their high school requirements at the conclusion of the fall semester.

Players from five states are represented. Twelve are from Texas, two from Oklahoma and one each from California, Florida, Illinois and Ohio.

Oklahoma, 12-2 last season, including an 8-0 mark in Big 12 play, begins its spring drills on March 24. The spring game is set for 2 p.m., on April 17. The Sooners will return 31 players with previous starting experience.
