NORMAN, Okla. The Sooner baseball team won its fifth-straight contest as Oklahoma defeated Southeast Missouri State 10-2 Sunday at L. Dale Mitchell Park to complete a three-game series sweep of the Indians. The Sooners took advantage of a big six-run third inning to take a large lead and never look back. Senior Mark Roberts (1-1) turned in a solid pitching performance to pick up his first win of the season, while juniors Matt Bose and Ole Sheldon both hit their first home runs of the year. Oklahoma's record improved to 5-1, while Southeast Missouri State fell to 0-3.

"We didn't have to play small-ball today, but I thought we continued to do a good job bunting the ball," commented OU head coach Larry Cochell on his team's consistent effort. "Our execution is going to continue to improve with the more games we play."

Box Score

The Sooners opened up a large 8-0 lead with a six-run, third frame. The Sooners' effort was aided by three Indian errors that prolonged the inning and allowed Oklahoma to bat around the order, including getting the first nine batters on base. The biggest hit of the inning was a triple by Bose (2-for-3) which plated the first three runs of the frame. After another run scored on a sacrifice fly by junior shortstop Brenan Herrera (1-for-1), sophomore catcher Brandon Lance (1-for-2) brought two more runs in with a double.

Roberts, who lasted seven innings, was tested early in the first inning. After loading the bases on two hits and a walk with only one out, he got consecutive batters to fly out and strike out to get out of the jam unscathed.

He went on to give up only one more hit over the next four innings before surrendering a two-run home run to designated hitter Eric Hoffman in the sixth inning to end the shutout. The Owasso, Okla., native ended the day with five strikeouts.

"Mark did a great job keeping his concentration throughout the game," said Cochell. "He did a really good job of keeping the ball low and in the zone."

Bose started the scoring for the Sooners in the second inning with a leadoff home run to left field. Senior rightfielder Andrew McGuire (1-for-1) followed Bose's shot by reaching base on a hit-by-pitch. McGuire stole second base and was sacrificed to third before coming home on a sacrifice fly by Lance, one of his career-high three RBI on the afternoon. McGuire later collected a single in the fourth inning to extend his career-best hitting streak to six games.

OU's final two runs of the game were scored on a RBI-single by Herrera in the fourth frame and Sheldon's solo shot to left field which led off the sixth inning.

OU hits the road this weekend to compete in the prestigious Kia Bash in Fullerton, Calif. The Sooners begin tournament competition on Friday against host and 14th-ranked Cal State Fullerton at 9 p.m. (CST). They will then face No. 20 Southern Cal at 4:30 p.m. (CST) on Saturday before concluding with fifth-ranked Georgia Tech on Sunday at 11:30 p.m. (CST).
