Errors Cost Sooners In 3-2 Loss To Bluejays

March 12, 2004 | Baseball

NORMAN, Okla. -    Two errors cost Oklahoma the game-winning runs as the Creighton Bluejays edged the 20th-ranked Sooners, 3-2, Friday afternoon at L. Dale Mitchell Park.  The Sooners committed errors on batters to lead off the fourth and the sixth innings to allow the eventual winning runs to reach base.

Junior pitcher David Purcey (2-1) suffered his first loss of the season despite allowing only one earned run in the contest.  Oklahoma fell to 10-5 on the year, while Creighton improved to 5-7.

Creighton starter Jeff Daneff (2-1) held OU to only two runs on three hits with one walk and five strikeouts.  Reliever Scott Reese picked up his first save of the year by finishing off the final three innings and continuing to hold the Sooners to only one hit.

Box Score

Creighton took advantage of leadoff errors in the fourth and sixth frames to capture the final two leads of the contest.  In the fourth inning, Bluejay first baseman Pete Wiedewitsch reached second base on a fielding error by junior third baseman Matt Bose (1-for-3).  After being sacrificed over to third base, Wiedewitsch crossed home plate on a sacrifice fly by designated hitter Dave Schultz.

After Purcey sat Creighton down in order in the fifth inning, Oklahoma's Brenan Herrera (1-for-3) bobbled a ball at shortstop which allowed Wiedewitsch to reach base on an error for his second straight at bat.  Following two quick outs, Bluejays catcher Tony Daniel singled in Wiedewitsch for the 3-2 lead.

Despite the loss, Purcey continued to pitch well.  In six innings of work, he gave up only five hits, one walk and struck out four.

The Bluejays scored their only earned run off Purcey in the third frame to take an early 1-0 lead.  With one out, centerfielder Gabe Lapito collected his second consecutive double off the lefty and scored two batters later on a RBI-single by shortstop Chase Odenreider.

A passed ball by the Bluejays' catcher allowed the Sooners' first run to score in the bottom of the third inning to tie the score at 1-1.  OU sophomore catcher Brandon Lance (1-for-3) doubled with one out, moved over to third base on a groundout, and scored when the catcher failed to glove a pitch.

Oklahoma got a clutch two out base hit from Herrera in the fourth inning to score their second run.  With runners at first and second base, Herrera knocked in senior rightfielder Andrew McGuire (1-for-3), who had led off the inning with a walk, with a single to left field to tie the game at 2-2.

Freshman Ryan Mottern turned in a solid performance in relief and finished off the final three innings for the Sooners.  Mottern entered the game to begin the seventh inning and surrendered only two hits, no runs and struck out a pair.  He faced the minimum in his first two innings and picked off a baserunner in the seventh after allowing the first hit of his outing.

The second game of the series starts at noon on Saturday at L. Dale Mitchell Park.  Senior righthander Casey Brown (2-1) is slated to start on the mound for the Sooners and will be opposed by Bluejays sophomore righthander Eric Wordekemper (0-1).
