Journal Entry No. 15 (Feb. 17, 2004)
I've been gone from my journal longer than normal. Sorry about that -- things have been busy around here with working out and school.
The past couple weeks we've continued to work on speed and strength plus trying to get our weight up. This time of year, everyone gets kind of light. So, we're making sure we're eating three or four meals a day and drinking our different protein shakes so everyone can keep their weight up.
Everybody's real excited with the recruiting class we've got coming in. I talked to Adrian Peterson on his visit and he seems like a good kid. He looks like he's going to be a great player. He doesn't look like a regular high school kid. He's tall and built good -- he looks like he could step in and play.
I've seen a few of the other guys and they look good too. I hope those guys come in willing to work and play so we can make another run for a championship.
We're going to keep up our workout schedules until spring ball starts in March. We're going to continue to get faster, stronger and bigger until we can get to spring ball and hit in full stride.
Jammal, I was wondering about the young offensive linemen coming up that could contribute?
- Derek from Skiatook, Okla.
As you can see, we have our whole line returning this fall. After that, there's going to be a lot of new faces when me, Wes and Vince leave. The young guys are going to have to make a lot of progress in the next six or seven months.
We've got guys like Akim Millington -- he's playing right tackle behind me. He's coming along real well. He's just got to get stronger and more physical. Chris Messner is a real athletic guy -- right now, he's just a little light. But, he's putting on weight and getting bigger every day. Antonn Reid -- people don't know much about him. He's a physical player and he's still getting adjusted to the speed of the college game. Give him some reps and he should be a good player.
Even though we'll be losing a lot of guys -- we've got guys coming in that should fill in. It will be tough but they'll have to be fast learners. They need to come in ready to play and with a willingness to learn and to work hard.
Jammal, talk more specifically about your lifts and workouts...
- Scotty from Amarillo, Texas
Scotty, how are you doing? Basically the lifts we're doing now are a lot of explosive lifts. Like snatch, hang clean and high pulls. Stuff where you have to use your hips to be explosive. That's part of our position -- rolling your hips into the other guy and firing off. We're also doing the basic lifts like bench and incline. Mostly though, we work on explosive lifts.
Why are you keeping a journal and how did you get chosen?
- Tanya from Jamaica
Tanya, do you not want me to do a journal down there in Jamaica? Just kidding. I do the journal because I think it's important that the people who support the program and enjoy watching us play can benefit from an inside scoop. They can learn what we do that they don't usually know about. I do the journal for our fans. So you all can have an idea of what really goes on.
Sometimes all you get to see is football on Saturday and nothing until the next game. I can take you all through some things -- like what we do through the week, Monday through Friday, to prepare for the game. Plus I can talk about what we do in the offseason. That's some of the reasons I do the journal.
Why did I get chosen? Probably because I'm pretty... Ha. (not much of a factor since all you can do is read what I am writing.) I'm actually really shy and I don't do well talking to people face-to-face. I do better when I can talk to people on the computer.
Hey Jammal, how are the young defensive linemen progressing?
- Michael from Washington D.C.
Hey, what's up Michael? I usually go up against some of those young guys in practice. Moe Dampeer is really, really athletic and he's going to be a great player. Steve Coleman -- he'll be a good player too when he gets more adjusted to the speed of the college game. Another guy that's good is Alonzo Dotson. He's not very big but he's a good technician. All those guys should be pretty good. They have to continue to learn and work hard in practice. They just have to stay focused.
