Journal Entry No. 3 - Dec. 6, 2004 Another two weeks has already passed and I'm late for my new entry. I can't believe how fast time goes when you need more of it. It seems like some sick joke the closer I get to finals. I mean really, it's unbelievable. I can't believe that we were just in the Bahamas a week ago! It seems like about two months ago. I guess that's because everyone has to do about 50,000 things at once.
The Bahamas were interesting. I guess I really hadn't thought about what they would be like, but I was a bit surprised. I was expecting something a little more tropical, and flowery. Besides my expectations for the vegetation, I really didn't know what to expect.
We played in a little local high school gym. When we arrived there during the day for our practices, the kids were still in school. They shouted at us from their classrooms and some of them even watched us practice. Our trainer taught them how to sing Boomer Sooner. It was all pretty amusing.
As I got to spend more time on the island, I really began to warm up to it. Erin and I walked along the beach. We saw some of the damage the hurricane has done to the island, millions and millions of dollars worth of damage. To add insult to injury, the Bahamas receive over 70% of their national income from tourism. I think this tournament was in fact the biggest tourist event since the storm.
Like I was saying, as I got to see more of the island, despite the devastation which the Bahamian people were quickly and happily recovering, I really started to enjoy it. The people are amazing. They have so much pride for what they have built together. It was awesome to see these people come together and press on. I hadn't anticipated how devastated the island would be from the hurricane.
I also hadn't anticipated losing. But, if I've learned anything, things can't and won't always turnout how you want them to. I cannot complain about anything in my life. The most difficult issues I deal with still involve multiple options and alternatives. That little Bahamas Island had no other alternative than to weather the storm.
It is easy to lose perspective, especially when you're young and you play sports. Coach Coale says that when an obstacle is presented, it presents an opportunity for growth. I know this to be true, because we did it last year.
