NCAA Grants Dvoracek Hardship Waiver

December 14, 2004 | Football

NORMAN, Okla. -- The NCAA today granted a hardship waiver to Oklahoma defensive tackle Dusty Dvoracek.  The waiver would clear the way for Dvoracek to play for the Sooners in 2005 pending reinstatement to the team by head coach Bob Stoops.

“We will not visit this situation until we're back in school for the second semester,” Stoops said.

The NCAA reinstatement staff granted the Big 12's appeal of its hardship denial on behalf of Dvoracek since the criteria of the NCAA hardship waiver legislation was satisfied.  Specifically, a student-athlete can be granted a hardship waiver in situations where he/she competes in limited competition and then is unable to compete in the remainder of the season as a result of an incapacitating injury or illness.

The student-athlete and/or institution must submit contemporaneous documentation from his/her medical doctor indicating that he/she was unable to participate in athletics.

Hardship waivers are administered by the conference office. In this case, the waiver was denied by the Big 12. The conference can appeal to the reinstatement staff.  The Big 12 did so and the criterion of waiver was met, thus waiver was granted.
