NORMAN, Okla. -- University of Oklahoma head women's basketball coach Sherri Coale, along with Olympic gold medalist Dr. Dot Richardson, co-hosted the 14th annual NCAA Woman of the Year Awards Dinner on October 31 at the Westin in Indianapolis, Ind. The NCAA Woman of the Year Banquet will be televised on ESPN 2 on December 3, 2004 at 3 p.m.

The NCAA Woman of the Year Award, one of the most prestigious that the NCAA bestows, honors senior student-athletes who have distinguished themselves throughout their collegiate careers in the areas of academic achievement, athletics excellence, service and leadership. The overall winner is selected from 10 finalists. The 10 finalists are selected from winners from each state and the District of Columbia.

“It was truly an honor to be in the midst of such an impressive group of young women,” said Coale. “I never cease to be amazed by student-athletes. The Woman of the Year Awards celebrated all that's good in competitive collegiate athletics, reminding us all of the opportunities for growth and achievement afforded young women in the 21st century. I walked away from the event inspired.”

Kelly Albin, a former lacrosse standout at University of California-Davis, was named the 2004 NCAA Woman of the Year. Albin was chosen from 276 nominations. A selection committee composed of representatives from member schools chose 52 winners representing the states, District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, and then narrowed the field to 10 national finalists. The NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics selected Albin from among the 10 finalists.

Former Sooner Phylesha Whaley (1997-2000) was an NCAA Woman of the Year finalist in 2000. Whaley was Coale's first recruit.
