NORMAN, Okla. -- Six Oklahoma football players were named to the Big 12 Conference's academic all-conference team on Tuesday as announced by the league office.
Leading the way was senior cornerback and punt return specialist Antonio Perkins who made the first team list for the second straight year. Perkins also garnered second team honors in 2001.
Joining Perkins on the first team list was a trio of reshirt-freshmen including running back Tashard Choice, tight end Joe Jon Finley and defensive tackle Carl Pendleton.
Representing OU on the second team list was senior cornerback Brandon Shelby and senior quarterback Jason White who both took home honors for the second time in their careers. Shelby was a first-team honoree in 2001 and White made the second team list last year.
Nominated by each institutions director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the football academic all-league squad consisted of 84 first-team members combined with 58 on the second team. First team selections have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, while second team selections have maintained a 3.00 to 3.19.
To be recognized as a first team member, players must have maintained a grade point average of 3.2 or better (either cumulative or for the two previous semesters) and must have participated in 60 percent of his team's scheduled contests.
For a second team member, the GPA requirements are for those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 and meet the participation requirements. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are eligible.
