Something funny happens to people when they spend as much time together as we do. I have the feeling that it happens to a lot of teams. Slowly you become more comfortable and without noticing you start doing the weird stuff that you really only do by yourself.
For instance, Erin (Higgins) has the super-human ability of burping louder than any creature I've ever heard (mind you, I was raised with three brothers). She'll unleash an earth shattering belch, forgetting that people are there until we all burst out in either laughter or disgust. Erin isn't a really good example because she would probably do that anyway.
Also, you could walk by our weight room on any given day and see Laura, Krista, Kendra and others dancing around as if it were in front of their mirror at home and no one was watching.
I guess my point is I really like this team. They've become a part of my family. We've reached a level of comfort and trust that I'm sure not a lot of teams ever experience. This is a really special team.
Within the last two weeks we have played our two exhibition games. Coach Coale's trademark comment about the first game was, "You only have one chance to make a first impression." I think it was a good one because we had a pretty good turn-out to the next game against Oklahoma Christian.
The latter game didn't fair quite as well as the game against Latvia. Of course that isn't too surprising, as the average age of the Latvians was 35. I know we won both games handily, but it isn't always about points and statistics.
I don't know if you've ever heard the phrase, "You're not playing against the other team; you're playing against the game of basketball." This seems to make more and more sense the older I get. When I was a freshman it just meant practice was really going to be tough the next day. Now it seems to mean a little more than that.
This team is capable of accomplishing amazing feats, and we cut ourselves short if we just look at the scoreboard. My original interpretation of the quote is completely valid and oh-so true but now it has a slightly deeper meaning.
Practice is going really well. We still get the spurts of genius every now and then. Everyone is excited about starting the games "for real." Day by day we grow into our own (I don't really know what that means but it sounded good there). We'll just keep fighting everyday to become the team that we are capable of being.
Enough sports clichs for now!
See you when we get back from Thanksgiving in the Bahamas! (Oh and how thankful I am!)
