Sooners Record First Conference Win Over Baylor

October 08, 2004 | Soccer

NORMAN, Okla. --  The University of Oklahoma soccer team broke its three-game losing streak with its first Big 12 win of 2004 over Baylor, 2-1, on Friday in Waco, Texas.   Freshman Colleen Keester scored the game winner, her first collegiate goal, on an unassisted tally from 20 yards out with 32 seconds remaining in the first half.

"I think we played great tonight," said head coach Randy Evans.  "The defense was solid except for giving up one goal on an uncharacteristic mistake but we rebounded and played a solid game.  This is a big win at this point in the season for us."

Sophomore Savannah Scott scored the game's first score and added on to her team lead in goals with her fifth tally of the season at the 8:29 mark. OU is 5-2-2 when it scores first in a contest this season.

"Savannah has played great ever since Lauren MacIver went down with the injury against Missouri," added Evans.  "Savannah has really stepped it up and taken charge of the offense in the past couple of games and tonight was another prime example of that."

Baylor's Tiffany Boshers tied the game at one goal apiece in the 33rd minute, but the OU defense was able to limit the Bears' offense throughout the contest, despite giving up only its second goal of the season in the first half.

OU led the shot count with a 12-11 advantage.  Scott led all Sooners with four shots in the contest, while junior Christy Kenkel added three shots and Keester recorded two more.

Freshman goalkeeper Jennifer Nichols made her third consecutive start in the OU goal and made one save.  Nichols is now 2-3-2 on the season and 1-2 in Big 12 play.  The Sooners were without defender Jenny Jones who was sitting out the contest after receiving a red card in the Texas A&M game last Sunday.  Jones will return for the Sooners' next game.

"Tonight was a big win for this team, it was a must win situation," commented Evans.  "We will now take our next game on Sunday with the same attitude and will be very happy to return home after this weekend."

The Sooners (5-4-3 overall, 1-3-0 Big 12) will look to continue its solid play on the road with a Sunday contest at Texas Tech at 1 p.m.  Baylor falls to 4-7-1 overall and 1-4 in Big 12 action.  OU is tied in eight all-time meetings with the Bears with the series knotted at 3-3-2.

After the Texas Tech contest, OU will have played nine of its last 10 games on the road and it will return home for four of its last five games, next week, to conclude the season.
