Preston Continues To Improve

October 29, 2004 | Women's Basketball

Norman, Okla. --- The Oklahoma women's basketball team entertained about 300 OU Fast Break Club members and season ticket holders in a two-hour scrimmage Friday night inside the Lloyd Noble Center. Tonight's intrasquad scrimmage wasn't' as sharp as Sunday's closed scrimmage but the intensity and competitiveness stood out.

“It was sloppy,” said OU coach Sherri Coale. “We turned it over lot more than we have been in practice and then we did on Sunday. Part of that is our defense has improved dramatically over the last week, that's been our emphasis during practices. Sometimes when you start emphasizing one thing, you slide back a little bit on another. We have to create a balance between the two before we take the floor on Thursday.”

The Sooners played four 10-minute quarters and rotated the lineups in each. Junior Beky Preston led all scores with 21 points, followed by sophomore Leah Rush's 19, including two threes, and sophomores Chelsi Welch and Krista Sanchez added 12 each. Senior Dionnah Jackson had 10 points, four rebounds and three assists.

“I like the way Beky (Preston) is playing in the post, even though she didn't finish as much as she did Sunday,” Coale said. “I like where she's catching it (the basketball) and how often she's catching it.”

However, Coale didn't like the 40 combined turnovers and fouls. The Sooners were able to connect on 25-of-35 free throws for a 71.4 free throw percentage. The team collected 75 rebounds, lead by freshman's Kelly Lam's seven and Preston's six.

“Overall, we just have to keep competing and keep getting better,” said Coale. “We need to remember that we're very young and it's very early, practice 13.”

Following the scrimmage, OU players and coaches hosted the Sooner Fast Break Club for a pizza party at the Kerr McGhee Courtside Club.

Oklahoma's first exhibition game will take place on Thurs., Nov. 4 against a club team from Riga, Latvia (TTT Riga). The Sooners will tip at 7 p.m. inside the Lloyd Noble Center. Tickets are available.
