Oklahoma Remains No. 2 in Latest Polls

NEW YORK -- The folks at Arizona State weren't the only people impressed by USC's performance.

Southern California regained nine first-place votes and solidified its hold on the top spot in the latest Associated Press college football poll released Sunday.

On Saturday, the defending national champion Trojans (6-0) raced to a 35-point halftime lead and routed ranked Arizona State, 45-7, convincing a handful of voters in the process.

USC had lost seven first-place votes following last week's narrow home win over California. The Trojans regained those and then some, receiving 50 first-place votes and 1,610 points from a panel of writers and broadcasters.

It was a timely performance by USC, which also holds the top spot in the coaches' poll. One day before the release of the first BCS rankings - which heavily weight both weekly polls - the Trojans figure to hold the top spot.

Oklahoma (6-0) remained second after rallying for a 31-21 win over Kansas State. The Sooners received 13 first-place votes - 10 less than last week - and 1,567 points.

The next two spots flip-flopped as Auburn (7-0) moved into third with the remaining two first-place votes and 1,478 points after a convincing 38-20 win over Arkansas.

Miami (5-0) dropped to fourth despite a 41-38 home win over Louisville on Thursday. The Hurricanes scrambled to erase a 31-14 second-half deficit.

Florida State (5-1) climbed two spots to fifth on the heels of a 36-3 home rout of previously unbeaten Virginia (5-1), which tumbled from sixth to 14th.

Wisconsin (7-0) jumped four spots to sixth after its 20-17 win at previously unbeaten Purdue (5-1), which dropped from fifth to 12th.

California (4-1), Texas (5-1), Utah (6-0) and Georgia (5-1) all inched up with wins and round out the top 10.

Tennessee (5-1) also moved up two spots to 11th and is followed by Purdue, Michigan (6-1), Virginia, Louisville (4-1), West Virginia (5-1), Texas A&M (5-1), LSU (4-2), Boise State (6-0) and Florida (4-2).

Texas A&M has won five straight games since a season-opening loss at Utah and moved up six spots.

Arizona State (5-1) and Oklahoma State (5-1) each suffered their first losses and fell six slots to 21st and 22nd, respectively. They are followed by newcomers Virginia Tech (5-2), Notre Dame (5-2) and Iowa (4-2) Southern Miss, Ohio State and Minnesota fell from the rankings.
