Peterson Scores Another Honor

NORMAN, Okla. -- College football fans nationwide have voted for Oklahoma freshman running back Adrian Peterson as the Cingular/ABC Sports All-America Player of the Week after his breakout performance against Texas on Saturday.

Peterson rushed for 225 yards on 32 carries in just his fifth college game to help lead No. 2-ranked Oklahoma to 12-0 victory over No. 5 Texas in the Red River Shootout. He is the first running back to win the award this season.

Peterson, who is the first Sooner player to begin his career with five consecutive 100-yard rushing games, was nominated for the honor by a panel of ABC Sports and ESPN college football analysts, led by John Saunders, after his record-setting performance on Saturday. Through five games, Peterson has 771 yards rushing and six touchdowns. He ranks No. 4 in the country with an average of 154 yards rushing per game.

Peterson was one of four candidates for the Cingular/ABC Sports All-America Player of the Week. The other finalists this week included: Oregon quarterback Kellen Clemens (three passing touchdowns, three rushing touchdowns); Texas Tech quarterback Sonny Cumbie (436 yards passing, five touchdowns), who won the award in Week 2; and California quarterback Aaron Rodgers (29 of 34 passing, 267 yards, one touchdown).

The Cingular Wireless/ABC Sports All-America Player of the Week marks the first time in college football history where fans are in command and can vote on who they think deserves to be the All-America Player of the Week. The candidates are announced during ESPN “SportsCenter” following “College GameDay Final” each Saturday night.
