NORMAN, Okla. -- Oklahoma running back Adrian Peterson has picked up one national award and is nominated for another following his performance against Texas, Saturday. The true freshman has been named the Walter Camp National Offensive Player of the Week and is nominated for the Cingular/ABC Sports All-America Player of the Week award.
Peterson rushed for a season-high 225 yards as the second-ranked Sooners (5-0, 2-0 in the Big 12) defeated fifth-ranked Texas,12-0. The Palestine, Texas native was instrumental in setting up the Sooners' two scores on the day.
In fact, Oklahoma held the ball for just over 36 minutes in the contest. Peterson has now rushed for 100+ yards in each of his first five collegiate games - the only player in OU history to do this.
The Cingular/ABC nominees are posted for online voting.
Peterson is one of four candidates for the All-America Player of the Week, who are selected by a panel of ABC Sports and ESPN college football analysts, led by John Saunders.
The other finalists are:
Texas Tech quarterback Sonny Cumbie, a former Cingular/ABC Sports All-America Player of the Week winner who passed for 436 yards and five touchdowns in the Red Raiders' 70-10 victory against Nebraska; California's junior quarterback Aaron Rodgers who tied an NCAA record with 23 straight completions to start the game and finished 29 of 34 with 267 yards and one touchdown in No. 7 California's 23-17 loss to No. 1 USC; University of Oregon quarterback Kellen Clemens who threw three touchdowns and ran for three more scores to lead a 41-38 come-from-behind win for the Ducks over Washington State.
The final decision for who will be this week's winner now rests in the hands of college football fans nationwide. For the first time in college football history, fans can now make the call on who they think deserves to be the All-America Player of the Week with the power and ease of wireless text-messaging.
Cingular is making the voting open to other wireless carriers* allowing even more fans to participate. Fans can also vote online at www.abcsportsallamerica.com or at ESPN.com (keyword: cingular).
Sooner fans can show their support for Peterson by voting for him up until 7 p.m. CST on Sunday, October 3. The winner will be announced during the Oct. 3, 11 p.m. EST broadcast of ESPN “SportsCenter”.
