For the second time in as many weeks, an Oklahoma player has secured one of the Big 12 Conference's football player of the week honors. This week, it's punter Blake Ferguson, whose big leg and accurate arm helped lead OU's 20-13 victory at Alabama, Saturday. Ferguson follows Derrick Strait in receiving Big 12 honors. Strait was last week's defensive player of the week.
Ferguson, a junior from Broken Arrow, Okla., averaged 48.6 yards on five punts, a career-best average. He unleashed a career-long boot of 59 yards, his, shortest kick was still 42 yards and one of his punts pinned Alabama at its own four-yardline.
Ferguson also completed one pass for 22 yards. Late in the third quarter, with OU leading 13-10 and facing a fourth-and-10 at its own 31-yard line, Ferguson passed on a faked punt to Michael Thompson on a 22-yard play that gave Oklahoma a first down. On the next play, QB Jason White threw a 47-yard touchdown pass to WR Brandon Jones to give the Sooners back their decisive 10-point lead.
Other Big 12 honors for the week went to Oklahoma State RB Tatum Bell as offensive player of the week and Nebraska WLB Demorrio Williams as defensive player of the week.
