Jammal Brown Journal No. 2

Sooner offensive tackle Jammal Brown joins Pasha Jackson with his own journal to take Sooner fans behind the scenes as OU plays its 2003 season. Brown gives us his perspective from the offensive side of the team.

Journal Entry No. 2 (Sept. 30, 2003)
I'm back with my journal this week and now I'm going to answer some of your questions you emailed in. Check for the link at the end of this page to email a question to me and maybe I'll get a chance to answer in my next entry. OK, here's the first question:

Who do you think is the most underrated player on the team?
- Zack from Claremore, Okla.

I have to say Dusty Dvoracek. He plays hard. He may not be credited with a lot of tackles but he's like Tommie (Harris). He disrupts things. His engine just goes and goes. He's one of those overachievers. He's really strong and just plays with a lot of emotion. That makes him almost unblockable. He hustles and makes big plays down the field.

How did you run down that UCLA player that intercepted one of our passes? And, what pro offensive lineman best represents your type of game?
- Hank from Arizona

On that interception, I saw the guy that picked it and I had a good angle. I just ran him down. I wasn't going to let him get away. We've got a pretty good defense. Our defense is known for stopping drives before the end zone. I just wanted to give my defense a chance. I just got on my horse and ran and got him. I was pretty tired after that play (laughs). I'm glad I caught him to give my defense a chance.

Note: Vince Carter was sitting nearby while Jammal answered this question.

Where was Vince on that play? He probably got blocked and was headed to the sideline. You know, Vince isn't that fast and it was probably a good thing that he stayed where he was. He might have pulled a muscle or something (laughs).

The pro guy I think represents my game -- oh, I'd say Kyle Turley. We're about the same size, 6-5, about 305 or 310. He's a good, physical player. I like him and Orlando Pace. But I'd say Kyle Turley because he's a right tackle too.

Jammal, you came to OU as a defensive tackle. What do you miss about playing defense?
- Haze from Frisco, Texas

Defense, you're more singled out. You can make solo tackles. As an offensive line, you're a unit. I have to do my thing right for Wes (Sims) or Vince to be successful. You're more in the spotlight on defense. You get stats like sacks and tackles. We only get one or two stats, if we give up a sack or maybe knockdowns. Defense is a little more glamorous.

Who's the toughest D-lineman you've faced (besides your teammates)?
- Ryan from Harrah, Okla.

Oh, that's easy. My redshirt freshman year, the first game I ever played was against Nebraska (in 2001). Chris Kelsay let me know I was in Division 1 football. Of course, I couldn't hear up there either. I still apologize to Nate (Hybl) for the hits he took. Kelsay was a tough guy.

Jammal, do I need to give John a bigger allowance so he can buy extra toothpaste?
- John W. Flynn from Anadarko, Okla.

I think Flynn is OK. He always has the toothpaste with bleach in it and it's just nasty (laughs). That toothpaste ritual just kind of happened. Now, as I'm packing, I look at my toothpaste and just think, ' Ah, you know, Johnnie can get me when we get to the hotel.'
