2003 Season Preview: Special Teams

Perkins, Lehman Named Big 12 Players of the Week

September 22, 2003 | Football

Oklahoma LB Teddy Lehman and PR Antonio Perkins and Oklahoma State WR Rashaun Woods have been tabbed as SBC Big 12 Conference Players of the Week for games of Sept. 18-20 in voting by a select panel of media covering the Big 12.

Lehman of Fort Gibson, Okla., Perkins of Lawton, Okla., and Woods of Oklahoma City, Okla., are SBC Defensive, Special Teams and Offensive Players of the Week, respectively.

Perkins and Woods accomplished their honors in NCAA record-setting fashion.

The OU junior standout returned seven punts for 277 yards and three touchdowns in a 59-24 win over UCLA. The yardage and touchdown totals established NCAA records. The returns' yard mark for a game previously was held by Golden Richards of BYU with 219 yards against North Texas in 1971 (five attempts).

The earlier touchdown record of two was held by several.  Perkins' touchdown returns covered 74, 84 and 65 yards, and he moved to within one career punt return for TDs of the Oklahoma and NCAA standard of seven.

Woods had an equally-memorable performance in Oklahoma State's 52-6 win over SMU last Saturday. The Heisman Trophy candidate caught 13 passes for 232 yards and seven touchdowns. The seven touchdowns set a NCAA Division I-A record, and the 232 yards also established a single game OSU mark.

Woods erased the 1969 NCAA record by San Diego State's Tim Delaney with six TD receptions against New Mexico State. The 232 yards eclipsed Woods' game record he set a year ago against Oklahoma when he had 226 yards on 12 receptions. He scored five of his touchdowns in the first half and the last two in the third quarter. His touchdown catches were from two, 10, 34, 32, 25, five, and 11 yards.

His seven touchdowns also represent the most scored by an OSU player in a single game while topping the former record of five held by former Heisman winner Barry Sanders and Terry Miller. The TDs scored tied the NCAA DIA game record of seven by Mississippi's Arnold Boykin in 1949 and San Diego State's Marshall Faulk in 1991.

Lehman continued his quest for the Butkus and Nagurski Awards with 14 tackles and a pass interception in OU's victory over UCLA. The Bruins had just one sustained drive on the afternoon. One UCLA touchdown drive covered just six yards while another touchdown was scored on a kickoff return. The Pacific-10 Conference opponent was 5-of-17 on third down
