NORMAN, Okla. The 2003 Oklahoma men's gymnastics team will be presented with its national championship rings at halftime of Saturday's OU-Fresno State football game. University President David Boren and Director of Athletics Joe Castiglione will present the rings to head coach Mark Williams and his squad during a special halftime ceremony.
"We're are very excited to be honored in front of 83,000 Sooner fans at halftime," said Williams. "We are looking forward to finally seeing the fruits of our labor and just want to say how much we appreciate all of the support from the fans."
In 2003, the Sooners went 26-0 winning the NCAA National Championship in Philadelphia, Pa. Williams was named NCAA Coach of the Year and became the first coach in NCAA history to win two titles in his first four years as head coach. Williams reached the 90-win plateau (93-7 career) faster than any other coach in NCAA history and owns the highest winning percentage of any active NCAA coach at 93 percent. Wiliams' squad will enter the 2004 season with NCAA best winning streaks of 42 overall, 28 on the road and 15 at home.
The ceremony will finalize what may have been the best season in Oklahoma gymnastics history. The Sooners set numerous NCAA records, including a scoring mark of 223.500, individual all-around score of 56.350 (Daniel Furney), and tying the record as just the second team to complete an entire season undefeated.
OU also broke a number of school records. Individually, the Sooners broke five of the event scoring records, while also breaking six of the seven team event scoring records. OU tied a school record with 11 All-Americans, given to six individuals, another OU best.
