DiCarlo Named To Lou Groza Preseason Watch List

Nearly a year removed from winning the starting placekicker position at Oklahoma as a walk-on freshman, sophomore Trey DiCarlo was named to the distinguished Lou Groza Collegiate Placekicker Award preseason watch list . The award, which is presented annually to the top kicker in the nation by the FedEx Orange Bowl, announced 30 preliminary candidates for the honor on Wednesday. Candidates were chosen based on their 2002 season statistics and preseason expectations. The award will be presented during a ceremony on December 9.

DiCarlo began receiving national attention last year after a record-setting freshman season in 2002. He established numerous school marks including field goals made by a freshman, field goals made in a game by a freshman (which also tied the school record) and points scored in a season by a freshman. The Carrollton, Texas, native successfully connected on 16 field goals last year which was the third best total in a season at OU and placed him in the top 10 on the schools career charts. He also converted on 58-of-62 extra point attempts.

His success did not go unnoticed as his performance earned him several accolades. In addition to being named a third team Freshman All-American by The Sporting News, DiCarlo garnered second team All-Big 12 Conference honors by the Dallas Morning News and received all-conference honorable mention recognition by the Associated Press and the league coaches.

DiCarlo and the rest of the Sooner squad open two and a half weeks of fall workouts today.
