Named to the team were Aldwyn Sappleton, Austin Landreth, Kelsey Moore, Terrika Warren and Renea' Burns. It marked the second year for Sappleton and Landreth to earn the honor and was a first-time selection for Moore, Warren and Burns.
In June, Darren Hutchins was named to the Verizon/CoSIDA Academic All-America third team. Sappleton, Landreth and Alaina Dearman, a senior on the 2003 team, earned spots on the Verizon all-district team as well.
To be nominated for the team, student-athletes had to earn a 3.25 grade point average and qualify for NCAA competition. Sappleton competed in the NCAA Indoor before earning All-America honors at the NCAA Outdoor in the 800-meter run. Landreth won the NCAA Midwest Regional pole vault title and competed at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Moore (high jump), Warren (400) and Burns (javelin) all qualified for the NCAA Midwest Regional meet.
Additionally, the Sooner men's team was named an All-Academic team. Earlier the Sooner men's and women's cross country teams had earned Academic All-America team honors.
'We emphasize to our student-athletes that what they do in the classroom is as important, if not more important, than what they do in competition,' explained co-head coaches Jill Lancaster and Rodney Price. 'We are proud of the efforts of these individuals and of the men's team as a whole. Last year was a challenging one for all of our student-athletes with the extension of the outdoor season and the additional competition at a regional meet. It opened up a number of opportunities and our student-athletes met the challenges with success.'
