The Oklahoma Sooner football team will don retro helmets and jerseys for the August 30 season opener at the newly renovated and expanded Gaylord Family - Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.
The game-worn helmets and jerseys, modeled after those worn during the Bud Wilkinson era, will be auctioned at the Sooners' official athletic site, www.SoonerSports.com, beginning early next week.
The auction is scheduled to end Sunday, Sept. 7 at midnight central time. Proceeds generated from the auction will go towards providing post-graduate scholarships for student-athletes who have exhausted their eligibility.
The remaining inventory will be sold online at the official fan store and at OU Authentic's retail location on the corner of Boyd and Asp on Campus Corner following the conclusion of the auction. The helmets will retail at $349 and the jerseys will retail at $249.
The OU Spirit Squads will also boast a nostalgic look with throwback uniforms. The cheerleaders will wear uniforms resembling those worn in the 40's and 50's while the poms will be outfitted in uniforms similar to those worn by the first football pom squad back in the mid-70's. These uniforms will also be included in the online auction.
The retro uniforms are being worn in recognition of the role former Sooner players and coaches played in establishing Oklahoma's unmatched tradition and without whom the recent stadium improvements would not have been possible. The coaches will wear polos and caps reminiscent of those worn in the Switzer era.
