White Tosses Three TD's In Final Preseason Scrimmage

August 19, 2003 | Football

Jason White tossed three touchdown passes, including two to sophomore wide receiver Jejuan Rankins, to highlight Oklahoma's third and final scrimmage, Tuesday at Gaylord Family - Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.

White connected on 17-of-25 passes for 219 yards and no interceptions. Rankins hauled in seven aerials for 115 yards and two touchdowns, one on a three-yard grab and the other from 34 yards out with an off-balance reception.

White's other scoring throw was a four-yarder to Mark Clayton during red zone drills. Clayton caught four passes for 31 yards.

Overall, OU head coach Bob Stoops liked what he saw.

"It was a good scrimmage," he said. "We did so many different things that it's a little hard to tell, but I was pleased with it. I liked a lot of factors of it. I don't believe there was a turnover all day and there were very few penalties. There were fewer busted assignments."

Running backs Kejuan Jones and Renaldo Works combined for just two carries, which meant much of the work went to other backs. Donta Hickson rushed five times for 50 yards.

Defensive backs Darien Williams and Jowahn Poteat led the defense with five tackles each. Brandon Shelby had four and one sack.

Other than White's TD passes, the offense punched in two other scores. Tashard Choice ran in from three yards out, while Jacob Gutierrez had a 10-yard scoring run in red zone work.

Tuesday's scrimmage capped a day of meetings for the Sooners. They'll return to two-a-days on Wednesday. A single practice is slated for Thursday with two on Friday and one on Saturday. Sunday is scheduled as a day off and classes begin no Monday.

Here is the text of Bob Stoops' comments following the scrimmage ...

On the defense: "We had our two offense working off cards with just a mixture of plays we'll see from other teams. They needed to see something different."

On finding starters at running back and tight end: "We're being smart to make sure we have our players for our games. I don't feel the sense of urgency that we have to find out today. We have a lot of games."

On Brent Rawls: "He looked good. He worked the number three offense against the number three defense and moved right now the field. I thought he looked good in the whole series."

On Jason White: "The more the better. He just needs to keep seeing it. I thought he looked good, calm, poised. I think he continues to improve. We need to sharpen up some deep passes and that's going to help."

On Tommy Grady: "He threw a few shots in there and that's good to see. It's a little easier going off cards. They even tell you who to throw it to."

On the defense: "It was solid. I thought last scrimmage, not this one, was good too. This was probably as fundamentally and technically as well as we've played. We were in position and tackled and covered. We played like you'd like to play. Again, they're so familiar with what we do that it's not totally an accurate picture."

On Jejuan Rankins: "Jejuan is a very good player. We're hoping he's a strong factor for us this year. He has the ability to be."
