Sooners Endure Hot Temperatures In Completing Sunday Drills

August 10, 2003 | Football

Oklahoma completed its first day in full pads during a steamy two and one-half hour workout on the OU Intramural Fields.  Rapidly rising temperatures and a heavy morning dew created tough conditions during the practice that ran from 8:30-11 a.m.

The team will hold a church service and meetings Sunday afternoon and evening.

The entire roster emerged healthy from the initial contact drills.  The Sooners begin two-a-day practices Monday.  The morning practice is set for 7:45-10 a.m., with the evening workout scheduled for 6-8:30 p.m.  Both will be on the Intramural Fields.

A research team from the Gatorade Sports Science Institute will be on hand beginning Monday morning as OU participates in new research in the area of muscle cramping.

On Tuesday, the team will stage a scrimmage at 6 p.m., in Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.  It will be the only practice on Tuesday.

Here are comments from head coach Bob Stoops following Sunday's practice ...

On the Oklahoma Drill -- "You have to start off (padded) practice with the Oklahoma drill.  Every one else in the country does so here at Oklahoma we certainly better.  That was exciting."

On the Kickers -- "I want the guy who kicks it to kick it deeper than we did last year.  Trey DiCarlo has been very good to this point.  On field goals, he's been excellent.  I don't that he's missed one in four or five days of practice.  That's very encouraging.  He hit some yesterday frmo 52 yards.  He's hitting it well.  I believe he's made improvements."

On the Punters -- "Everybody wants to make a decision today.  We'll make our decisions as we go, but those guys are better.  Ferg (Blake Ferguson) has improved from a year ago and Cody (Freeby) is right there with him."
