NORMAN, Okla. After posting solid scores during the USA Gymnastics Championship Event Finals in Milwaukee, Wis., on Friday evening a trio of Sooners rounded out the national competition with top 25 finishes on Sunday afternoon. OU assistant coach Guard Young finished in seventh, NCAA Champion Daniel Furney improved to 16th place, while All-American Heath Mueller finished 25th in his first USA Championships competition.
Young closed the competition with an all-around score of 54.350 and two-day total of 110.075. Youngs seventh place finish will likely land him a spot on the Pan American Games Team. His afternoon was highlighted by a 9.400 on high bar, which historically was not his strongest event. Young also notched impressive scores of 9.45 on still rings and 9.3 on vault. Thanks to his finish in the top eight, Young was automatically named to the USA National Team.
NCAA All-Around Champion Daniel Furney improved his all-around score from the event finals (53.125) and also improved his standing to No. 16 with a 53.300. His two-day score of 106.425 was highlighted Sunday by a world class 9.500 on parallel bars, as well as a 9.150 on vault.
Mueller, a senior in the fall, had another flawless afternoon and scored a 51.850 in the all-around for a two-day score of 104.750. Mueller collected a 9.10 on vault and a 9.05 on parallel bars. The Yukon, Okla., native impressed in his first career meet on the national stage.
"Heath was very good this weekend," said OU Head Coach Mark Williams. "He finished better than several former national team members. His 25th place finish is a great achievement."
Williams expects Furney to be named to the World University Games team and said that the official announcements regarding Furney and Young will come in the next week.
The top eight men from the U.S. Gymnastics Championships were named to the National Team immediately following Sundays awards ceremony. Six additional athletes will be named later Sunday, along with the remaining five members of the World Championships squad.
NBC Sports will broadcast the championship finals on Aug. 2 from 3:30-5 p.m.
