Title Defense Begins With Defeat Of No. 6 Michigan

Golfer, Gymnast Named Academic All-Americans

NORMAN, Okla. Oklahoma senior gymnast Brett Covey and junior golfer Doug Manor were named to the 2002-03 Verizon Academic All-American Mens At Large Third Team Tuesday morning. In 2002 Sooner gymnast David Johnston was named a first team Verizon Academic All-American. Five members of the mens golf team made the All Big 12 Academic Team, while six gymnasts made the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Academic First Team.

Covey, who has exhausted his eligibility, qualified with a 3.58 cumulative GPA in chemical engineering. Covey was a two-time All-American and two-time MPSF Champion on the still rings. Recently, Covey competed in the Canadian Gymnastics National Championships and finished second on the still rings. He was a member of the 2002 Canadian World Championships Team and is being considered for the 2003 Pan American Games Team. Covey was named to the College Gymnastics Association National Academic Team in 2002 and 2001. The OU mens gymnastics team qualified six individual to the CGA National Academic Team in 2002.

Manor is carrying a 4.0 cumulative GPA in finance. Manor recorded three top-10 finishes this year and finished sixth at the Big 12 Championships. Manor had the third-best scoring average on the team with a 73.3. He was also one of the six golfers named to the 2003 Academic All-Big 12 first team earlier this year. Manor was one of two mens golfers in the Big 12 Conference with a 4.0 GPA.

Nominees for the Verizon Academic All-American honor must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale). He must be of sophomore academic standing and must have completed one academic year at the sponsoring institution. Nominated athletes must have competed in at least 50 percent of the teams games. Covey and Manor, who also made the District VI Academic Team, were voted onto the All-American team by the Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
