Cornejo Honored As Big 12 Baseball Co-Player of the Week

NORMAN, Okla. - After batting at an .800 clip during a pivotal weekend series against Texas Tech, Oklahoma senior second baseman Eddie Cornejo was named the Co-Big 12 Conference Player of the Week by the league offices Tuesday afternoon. Cornejo led all OU sluggers in hitting last weekend as the Sooners moved past the Red Raiders into eighth place in the conference standings and put themselves in position for a potential conference tournament berth. The honor was the first of his career for the Mira Loma City, Calif., native as he shared the recognition this week with Oklahoma State first baseman John Urick. Texas hurler Huston Street was named the conference Pitcher of the Week.

For the week, Cornejo was nearly unstoppable at the plate as he batted .769 (10-for-13) with six runs scored and three RBI. His week began with a 2-for-3 effort with a run scored and one RBI against No. 4 Arizona State last Tuesday which improved his batting average against top 25 competition to .380 for the year. He then proceeded to record multi-hit performances and score at least one run in the next three games to pace the Sooners offensively as OU claimed its first Big 12 Conference series sweep of the year and second consecutive Big 12 series win. It also marked the first time in Big 12 history that the Sooners had won (and swept) a series from the Red Raiders.

His four multi-hit performances during the week boosted his team lead in the category to 23 as well as he pulled in to a tie for the team lead in multi-RBI efforts with his 10th of the year during Sunday's game. His streak of hits also extended his season-long seven-game hitting streak in which he is batting .500 (13-for-26) with six runs scored and five RBI during the stretch. His weekend performance helped him overtake the team lead in batting average and slugging percentage to add to his team best hits, RBI and doubles totals.

In addition to being one of Oklahoma's top offensive performers, Cornejo ranks as one of the top hitters in the Big 12. Cornejo began the week in sixth place in batting average, while posting a league-best .450 average during conference play.

Cornejo is now just the second Oklahoma player to receive the conference honor this season. Junior third baseman Jay Yaconetti was the only other Sooner to receive the award for his accomplishments during the week of March 3.

Cornejo and the rest of his Sooner teammates travel to Manhattan, Kan., for a weekend showdown with the Kansas State Wildcats. The three-game series begins Friday at 7 p.m. at Frank Myers Field.
