Stoops Accepts Shrine East-West Game Invitation

Norman, Okla. - University of Oklahoma head football coach Bob Stoops has been named the head coach of the West team for the 79th Annual Shrine East-West Football Game. Jack Hart, execuitive director of the game, made the announcement.

The game will he held at Pacific Bell Park, San Francisco, Calif., on Saturday, January 10, 2004. Kickoff time is 11 a.m. Pacific Standard Time (PST). LSU's Nick Saban will coach the East squad.

This will mark the second all-star game head coaching post for Stoops, who served in a similar capacity at the 2001 Hula Bowl.

Stoops is the fourth OU coach tabbed for the game, but the first as a head coach. The other Sooners to have coached in the game were Gomer Jones, West Team Assistant Coach in Game No. 41 (Dec. 1965); Bud Wilkinson, West Team Assistant Coach in Game No. 27 (1951); and Barry Switzer, West Team Assistant Coach in Game 59 (1984).

Stoops is 43-9 in four seasons at OU. He is off the best four-year start of any college football coach since 1900. His Sooner teams have won a pair of Big 12 championships and three bowl games, including two BCS contests. Over the last three seasons, OU has accumulated 36 victories, the highest total in college football during that span.
