NORMAN, Okla- Oklahoma volleyball head coach Kalani Mahi announced the signing of two student-athletes to national letters of intent during the late signing period Wednesday. The Sooners inked a juco transfer from powerhouse Southern Idaho and a prepster from Kansas. OU signed high school standouts Laura Tomes (Sioux City, Iowa), Joanna Schmitt (Cottage Grove, Wis.), and Anna Monsen (Stoughton, Wis.) during the early signing period. The early class was ranked No. 22 in the country and fourth best in the Big 12.
"This second group really adds to our previous signings," said Mahi. "We wanted players with talent and all-around athleticism. This is the most well rounded class our staff has brought to OU. We are bringing in experience with the junior college player and a hungry freshman who is ready to compete. As a staff we are also encouraged that the newcomers are well rounded student-athletes in and out of the classroom."
Mahi's first commitment during the late period was Keri Coats, a 6-4 middle blocker/right side hitter from Southern Idaho Junior College. Last season Southern Idaho finished third at the national tournament, while Coats collected season averages of 1.11 blocks per game, 1.48 kills per game, while hitting .268 on the season.
"Keri will probably play right side for us," said Mahi, "which will provide a significant barrier for Big 12 left sides. We were fortunate to find a player with the right mix of size, speed and athleticism. She has a lot of experience and has the qualities of a good leader."
Joining Coats is Kelli Albers, a 6-0 outside hitter and two sport star from Cheney, Kansas. Albers was first team all-league as a volleyball senior, while also competed for Cheney High's basketball squad. Albers made numerous all-tourney teams during her prep career and excelled in the classroom as a four year member of the honor roll. Albers is member of the Wichita Flyers Club Volleyball Team.
"We were attracted to her well rounded athleticism," said Mahi. "She has competed at the highest level of club volleyball and will battle for time as a freshman. She will train on the outside but has the capability of playing middle blocker."
The Sooners wrapped spring practice April 25, and will begin preparation for the regular season, which opens with fall practice at the beginning of August.
