AUSTIN, Texas - In a valiant attempt at stealing a win in the Red River Rivalry baseball series, Oklahoma's hopes for victory were spoiled in the bottom of the 10th inning as Texas registered the winning run for a 5-4 win Sunday afternoon at Disch-Falk Field in the series finale. Texas shortstop Omar Quintanilla doubled home left fielder Eric Sultemeier in the bottom of the 10th inning for the game-winning run. OU sophomore reliever Jarod McAuliff (1-4) suffered the loss for the Sooners who dropped their third extra inning affair of the season and fell to 13-19 overall and 1-11 in the Big 12 Conference. Texas's record improved to 29-11 overall and 12-3 in the league.

After being held scoreless for five frames by Texas starter Justin Simmons, Oklahoma knotted up the game at 4-4 with a pair of runs in the eighth rfame to eventually send the game into extra innings. Freshman second baseman Russell Raley (1-for-4) wound up on second base at the start of the inning after a single and an error on the throw by the Longhorn shortstop placed him in scoring position. In the next at bat, junior catcher Spencer Wyman (0-for-3) reached base safely in the following at bat on a strikeout-wild pitch combination to place Sooners at first and second with no outs. With one out and Longhorn closer Huston Street (3-0) on the mound, senior center fielder Reggie Willits (2-for-5) legged out an infield bunt to load the bases. Two batters later, sophomore first baseman Matt Bose (3-for-5) delivered a single to score the tying runs.

Longhorn left fielder Eric Sultemeier got Texas on the scoreboard early with his second home run of the series in the first inning. His roundtripper was a solo shot which gave UT a 1-0 lead.

Oklahoma capitalized on two straight hits to lead off the second frame to grab the lead at 2-1. Bose started things off with a single which junior third baseman Jay Yaconetti (1-for-5) followed with a double to right-center field. Two batters later, sophomore designated hitter Ben Pinkston (1-for-3) laced a single down the left field line that scored both runs.

Texas promptly tied the game up in the bottom of the frame by manufacturing a run after the lead off batter, first baseman Curtis Thigpen, reached after being hit by a pitch. A sacrifice and wild pitch later, Thigpen crossed home plate on a sacrifice bunt by the Longhorn catcher.

The Longhorns broke up the 2-2 tie in the bottom of the seventh inning by plating a pair of runs. With runners at third and second base and one out, Sultemeier scored Street on a sacrifice fly to center field which also allowed second baseman Tim Moss to move over to third base. Moss scored the second run on a wild pitch by oU sophomore reliever David Purcey.

Oklahoma starting pitcher Mike Swindell turned in his longest starting stint of the season by lasting 6.2 frames. After the two early runs, he worked his way out of several jams as Texas had runners in scoring position in three of the next four innings. All four runs charged to him in the game were earned as he also allowed only eight hits.
