Norman, Okla. - Alan C. Greenberg, a 1945 football letterwinner at the University of Oklahoma, has made a gift to endow the scholarship for the starting running back position in the Sooner program. It is the seventh position to be endowed at OU.
Greenberg, Chairman of the Executive Committee of Bear, Stearns Companies, Inc. in New York, NY, entered OU on a football scholarship, but was injured in his first year and transferred to Missouri where he graduated in 1949. He has remained a friend and loyal benefactor to OU for many years.
In 1980, he established the $500,000 Ted H. Greenberg Memorial Fund at the university's Health Sciences Center for the study of Parkinson's Disease. The memorial is in honor of his late father, who died from the disease. The fund supports scholarships for students who are in financial need due to chronic neurological illness within their families.
Greenberg also has contributed $500,000 to a fund that supports scholarship for students from Scandanavian countries. That fund is in gratitude to the people and governments of Scandanavian countries who rescued thousands of jews during the Holocaust.
Greenberg's involvement with athletics includes a gift to the Bud Wilkinson Society in 2001 and the sponsorship of a football locker to assist with the expansion of the Lester Wilkonson Locker Room in 2000.
A 1995 inductee into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame, Greenberg received OU's Distinguished Service Citation in 1984 and is a member of the school's Academy of Fellows. He was named Man of the Year by the National Conference of Christians and Jews in 1984 and was knighted by Queen Margrethe II of Denmark.
Other endowed positions on the Sooner football team include the Max A. Weitzenhoffer Quarterback Position, the Claire and Carl B. Anderson III Middle Linebacker Position, the W. Bryan Arnn Offensive Right Guard Position, the Dusty and LaFawn Bille and John and Mary Moore Placekicker Position, the Robert and Doris Klabzuba Punter Position and the Michael F. Price Strong Safety Position.
