NORMAN, Okla. - Senior Daniel Furney of the Oklahoma men's gymnastics team was named Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Gymnast of the Week, his second such honor of the week and the program's third. Furney was named NCAA Gymnast of the Week Thursday by Inside Gymnastics Magazine. Senior Shannon Carrion also received the NCAA Midwest Gymnast of the Week award from the same publication. The men's gymanstics program has now received 12 weekly awards over seven weeks of competition in 2003.
Daniel Furney recorded the nation's highest all-around score, 55.500, which was also an OU school record. Furney also broke the school record on parallel bars with a 9.500 against the Golden Gophers. All totaled Furney collected four first place finishes, three season-highs, two career-highs and two OU records.
Both seniors, along with Josh Landis and Brett Covey, will be honored on Senior Night, Friday at 7 p.m., when the top ranked Sooners square off with third ranked Ohio State and Stanford inside the Lloyd Noble Center. Admission to the meet is $5 for adults and $2 for children. The first 250 fans in attendance will receive free Thundersticks. For more information on tickets, call (800) 456-GoOU.
The OU women's gymnastics team will be facing Texas Women's University and Centenary in the same meet.
